BARNEY MARTIN – LUNG CANCER

Actor, writer and New York City police detective, Barney Martin, who millions of TV viewers will remember as the fictional father of Seinfeld (he was the third actor to play the role) in the hit television sitcom of the same name, died of bladder cancer in 2005. One of the most memorable moments Martin had on the show was when he invented a beltless trench coat, which he was said to have brought on the last episode for each cast member to sign. Interestingly enough, he wrote humorous speeches for deputy commissioners during his time as an NYPD detective.

Among his film credits include The Producers, Deadly Weapon, and Hero. Martin also appeared in a number of Broadway shows, including the original production of Chicago.
